Fee: £25.00 Word Limit: 10300 Have you written a literary or genre novel? Enter the beginning of it into ETA’s First Novel Prize for a chance to win a publishing contract with ETA Publishing House.
There will be four stages to the First Novel Prize.
Stage 1: Entrants will submit a 300-word synopsis and the first 10,000 words of their novels.
Stage 2: After the deadline of 30 November 2014 these entries will be judged and a short list of 5 drawn up.
Stage 3: The 5 short-listed entrants will be asked to submit their full novel to be judged by Sue Whitaker (author of Dear Anyone and other novels), Althea Williams(Managing Director, Williams and Williams Publishing) and Cauline Thomas-Brown(CEO, Senior Partner, ETA Publishing House) who will choose the overall winner.
Stage 4: ETA Publishing House will edit the novel, and publish it.
The Rules
1. There will be three stages to the First Novel Prize. Stage 1: Entrants will submit a 300-word synopsis and the first 10,000 words of their novels. Stage 2: After the deadline of 30 November 2014 these entries will be judged, a short list of 5 drawn up, and these writers will be notified by ETA Publishing House. Stage 3: The 5 short-listed entrants will be asked to submit their full novel to be judged by the judging panel who will choose the overall winner.
2. The First Novel judges' verdict is final. No correspondence or discussion will be entered into. We reserve the right to amend these Rules where it is deemed necessary to do so or where circumstances are beyond our control. We reserve the right to change members of the judging panel where it is deemed necessary to do so or where circumstances are beyond our control. Any changes to the Rules will be posted on the ETA Publishing website.
3. ETA Books has first refusal on purchasing the worldwide publishing rights of the winning First Novel
4. ETA Books reserves the right to edit (working closely with the author) the winning entry of First Novel - once a publishing contract has been negotiated and signed by both parties.
5. The First Novel Prize will close at midnight on 30 November 2014. Any novels submitted after the deadline will not be eligible for entry.
6. First Novel entries should not exceed 10,000 words. An extra 300 words have been allocated for a synopsis (plot summary: situation, complications, resolution). Please insert the synopsis at the beginning of your submission. Any entries into Stage 1 without a synopsis will be disqualified.
7. First novel is open to writers of any nationality writing in English. Adult Sexually Explicit or Fantasy genres are excluded. There is no restriction on style.
8. You must be 18 years of age or over to enter First Novel.
9. First Novel entrants must not have had a novel published before in book format, either self-published or published by any publishing company.
10. You can enter on-line via the manuscript submission page. No entry form is required.
11. You can enter as many times as you wish. One First Novel per entry fee. Do not enter if your work is not of the highest standard.
12. Please do not put your name anywhere on your First Novel entry. All judging is done anonymously. Any entries with names on them will have to be disqualified. If work is disqualified no refund will be given.
13. First Novel entries cannot be altered or changed after they have been entered into Stage 1 of the competition. The 5 short-listed entries may not be changed after submission to Stage 3 of the competition.
14. Please note that notification of receipt of entry will come from your payment processor (Paypal) and that no correspondence will be entered into once you have submitted your work.
15. First Novel entries will not be returned under any circumstances.
16. ETA Publishing reserves the right to disqualify any entry if it has reasonable grounds to believe that the entrant has breached any of these First Novel Rules.
17. The winner of First Novel is deemed by way of entering the competition to have granted ETA Publishing House imprint ETA Books exclusive worldwide license over their First Novel entry for publicity purposes thereafter. Selected pieces may appear in electronic format on the ETA Publishing website, or in other electronic forms.
18. ETA Publishing House reserves the right to not award the First Novel prize, and to cancel the publication of the novel, where circumstances are beyond our control, or if the judges’ overall verdict is that the level of entries is not up to the required standard for publication. We reserve the right to delay the deadline and to post information on our website to inform writers of the new deadline. In the very unlikely event of the competition being cancelled, entry fees will be refunded.
19. ETA Publishing House cannot accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the First Novel competition.
20. ETA Publishing House will act in accordance with current UK data protection legislation in relation to your personal data. All personal data entered on this site is secure.
21. Submission of entry is taken to be an unqualified acceptance of all these rules.
How to Enter
Online entry costs £25. Online entries will only be accepted if entered through our website. Please do not send your stories as email attachments. Please note that the cost of an online First Novel entry is fixed at £25 Sterling. Conversion to your local currency will be done automatically by your credit card company, according to the exchange rate at that time. Where PayPal fees are applicable please add them to the cost of entry. We cannot accept entry where the amount received is less than the entry cost. Upon receipt of your entry you will be sent an invoice via your email address to pay your entry fee. Please note that your entry will not be valid until your payment has cleared in full.
